3 Space Geometry: Lines, Planes, and Related Topics

by Michael S. Runstein

About the book:
The book provides an overview of lines in two dimensions plus lines, planes and vectors in three dimensions. It is written at the pre-calculus level as an introduction to topics generally not introduced until second or third semester calculus. Any student from Algebra II through Vector Calculus could find it useful. It is not intended as a text for a formal course. It is intended to supplement a text if the visitor is taking a class covering the subject matter. If the visitor is not taking a class, it provides a concise coverage of the topics.

The book has eight chapters. When the 3 Space Geometry book is published, illustrations like those shown in the module image links on the home page will be after each chapter, except Chapter 4.

About the software:
The software was written to supplement the book. Traditionally, textbooks give the reader examples, problems, and some of the solutions. The book does not have examples or problems. With the software, the user creates their own examples and problems and can immediately check their results. It was designed to be self-explanatory and should not need operating instructions. Each module, except Module 4, has an interface where the user enters data and an answer based on that data. The check button tells the user whether their answer is correct.

About the author:
Michael Runstein has a BS and MS in Mathematics from Portland State University and an MAT from Pacific University. His interests in programming and three-dimensional geometry were renewed after auditing courses in Python and Vector Calculus at Portland Community College. Those experiences led to the development of 3 Space Geometry: Lines, Planes, and Related Topics and its companion software as a way of presenting the material in an accessible and visual form.
